Mental health is the ability to thrive in all aspects of life. It is a state of well-being in which an individual is able to:

  • Acknowledge and understand their own strengths and weaknesses.
  • Successfully manage the challenges of daily life.
  • Be productive and engaged in their work or studies.
  • Contribute to their community and make a difference in the world.

Mental illness is a mental disorder that significantly impairs a person's thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Mental illnesses are typically associated with a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors.

World Mental Health Day is an annual event on 10 October, marked in over 150 countries to raise awareness of mental health issues and mobilize efforts in support of mental health. The theme for World Mental Health Day 2023 is "Living with schizophrenia."

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), people with severe mental illness typically die earlier than the general population. The average life expectancy of people with severe mental illness is 10 to 25 years shorter than the average life expectancy of the general population. WHO defines severe mental illness as psychosis, moderate to severe depression, and bipolar disorder.

Mortality

The death rate among people with schizophrenia is two to two and a half times higher than among healthy people. The death rate among people with depression is 1.8 times higher. The death rate among people with bipolar disorder ranges from 35 to 100%.

This can lead to making rash, bad decisions, such as investing all of their money in a questionable project.

They may also have false beliefs, such as that others can read their thoughts or that demons or spirits are possessing or controlling them. Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe disorder that can significantly impair a person's life.
  • Eating disorders: These disorders are caused by a psychological disorder that leads to an unhealthy attitude towards food, which leads to a person changing their eating habits and behavior towards it. They include:
    • Anorexia nervosa: In this disorder, a person tries to keep their weight at the lowest possible level by starving themselves or exercising excessively.
    • Bulimia nervosa: In this disorder, a person eats food and then tries to get rid of it by vomiting or taking laxatives.
