New Digital Edition Comes With Optional Ultra HD Blu-ray Drive

Sony has announced that new, smaller versions of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will be hitting store shelves in November. In addition, there is also an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive for Digital Edition consoles on the way.

The new models were revealed in a PlayStation blog post and are not being classified as PS5 Slim or anything similar. They are simply the latest major revisions to the latest console. The design resembles the launch models, but now consists of four individual faceplates, according to a Digital Trends report.

The top panels on each side feature a PlayStation logo and a glossy finish, while the bottom panels are made from the same matte material as current PS5 models. The design makes the Digital Edition and PS5 lighter and reduces the size of both devices by 30%.

In the United States, the new PS5 will be priced at $500, while the new Digital Edition of the PS5 will cost $450. Digital Edition owners can then replace one of the bottom faceplates with an $80 Ultra HD Blu-ray drive for the PS5, which will allow them to play physical copies of games or watch movies on what is currently sold as a digital-only console. Both new PS5 models come with a horizontal stand, though a new vertical stand is also in the works for $30.

Despite the smaller design, the new PS5 models do not come with a price cut. The model that includes the disc drive is still the same price as the current PS5 model, and the Digital Edition actually gets a price increase of $50 from the current Digital Edition price of $400. Those who want to upgrade and add an $80 drive later will end up paying more than the non-Digital Edition in the long run.

The PlayStation blog post confirms that the launch models of both PS5 consoles will be phased out as these new models hit store shelves in the United States sometime in November. If you are planning on getting a PS5 soon, it might be a good idea to consider waiting until these new models are released.
