Electric cars Charge to 80% in Just 10 Minutes

Electric cars have revolutionized the automotive industry as a whole, promising a sustainable future with reduced carbon emissions. As their popularity has grown, one of the major challenges has been charging speeds and battery life, which is essential for consumer acceptance and widespread adoption.

A team of battery scientists has recently developed a lithium-ion battery material that not only recharges 80% of its capacity in 10 minutes but maintains that capacity for 1,500 charge cycles, according to ScienceDaily.

When a battery is operating or being recharged, ions move between the electrodes through a medium called the electrolyte. Zhijia Du of ORNL led a team that developed new compositions of lithium salts with carbonate solvents to form an electrolyte that maintains better ion flow over time and works well when high current heats the battery during ultra-fast charging.

Project partners tested pouch battery cells made at ORNL's battery manufacturing facility to demonstrate battery safety. Du said, "We found that this new electrolyte composition essentially triples the U.S. Department of Energy's target for ultra-fast charging battery life."
